2025 Starter Kit - Allocation and Management

2025 Starter Kit - Allocation and Management

Context

The acquisition of starter kits was proposed in 2024 in the Magma Core Project as an easy and quick way to set up a full private network, using a Magma core, Magma orchestrator, the CPE and radio units from this kit. In 2025, those kits were acquired by the Magma Community. The main goal is to enable and improve initiatives to disseminate the Magma Project throughout the industry and academy.

Who is encouraged to request for starter kits

Anyone that can help share and contribute to the Magma Project is welcome to request for starter kits, specially Universities and Companies interested in working with mobile networks and Magma with intent of:

  • publishing articles or white papers citing the Magma Project;

  • training students or personnel in mobile network for the industry using Magma;

  • researching and implementing features for the Magma Project;

  • orchestrate workshops, demonstrations or events featuring a Magma powered mobile network;

  • releasing of products, announcing as Magma powered;

Individuals with proven relevant contributions to Magma Project with the same intent might be eligible to request for a starter kit as well, each case being thoughtfully cared by TSC and outreach members.

What are the allocation criteria

The evaluation for the allocation process is subjective and weight in by the TSC and outreach members following the below criteria:

  • reachability for the Magma Project;

    • the capacity for this allocation to reach more people and share the Magma project for new users or contributors;

    • the capacity for this allocation to train specialized people that might contribute with the Magma Project in the future.

  • relevance for the Magma Project;

    • the capacity for this allocation to bring in more relevant contributions, regardless of the amount of people working this kit;

    • the capacity for this allocation to bring in more relevant companies to work with Magma, providing installation and maintenance services;

Period of allocation

After the request approved, the starter kit will be sent to the requester  and remain there for a period of 3 months, with the possibility of renewal for 3 times, which means a maximum period of one year with the starter kit. After that, the starter kit will have to be made available back to the Magma Project and the requester, if interested, would have to fill another allocation request.

Renewal of allocation

The request for renewal of allocation should be made prior to the expiry date of the current allocation. Renewals should be evaluated following the same criteria of allocation, considering that shipping costs does not exist for a renewal, hence, giving a slight advantage for a renewal.

Shipment of the kit

After the evaluation of the request made to the Magma Community, if approved, one starter kit will be sent to the requester, being the requester responsible for covering the shipping costs, the requester responsible for covering the taxes and the requester responsible for sorting the needed paperwork.

Upon decision of the TSC and outreach committee, the Magma Project might cover the shipping fees.

Return of the kit

Upon expiry of the period of allocation, the requester is obliged to send the starter kit back to Magma Project, being the requester responsible for covering the shipping costs, the requester responsible for covering the taxes and the requester responsible for sorting the needed paperwork.

Upon decision of the TSC and outreach committee, the Magma Project might cover the shipping fees.

Non-compliance on returning the starter kit will result in sanctions being applied, including, but not limited to, application of the good standing policy from Linux Foundation, debt registration in a collector agency and litigation.

Keeping the kit

The requester may keep the starter kit upon a donation to the Magma Project as the nominal value of the kit acquisition from the last round increased by 10%.

Donations for Starter Kit initiative

Magma Project will accept donations from contributors that with to enforce the Starter Kit initiative. Received donations will be used to cover costs of shipping fees, taxes and acquisition of new starter kits.
